What is Smart Revise?

Smart Revise is a computer system especially designed to help you revise and remember material in the run up to your exam. The program adapts to your requirements and you will be presented with your own, unique Smart Revise routine.

Initially Smart Revise chooses questions at random. Smart Revise tracks how well you do on each question and chooses questions for you on the basis of how well you have done so far and how many sessions you have left before the exam. Difficult questions appear more often and continue to appear until you have grasped the concept. Easy questions do not disappear entirely - to make sure you haven't forgotten the answers - but they are asked much less often.

If you achieve a good track record early on, Smart Revise will reduce your workload and defer questions in order to test your ability to remember the material over a longer period. Similarly if you are having difficulties in some areas, Smart Revise will maintain or increase the workload to ensure you cover these areas adequately.

Establishing A "Smart Revision" Routine

It is strongly recommended that you establish a daily routine of "Smart Revision". Smart Revise assumes you will take five revision sessions per week though if you miss a few sessions for any reason Smart Revise will compensate automatically. You should start at least 10 weeks before your exam to give you and the program sufficient time to identify and work on your weak areas. After a while your daily workload should reduce as you become more familiar with the material.

If you find the workload increasing considerably, this indicates that you have areas that require more work. The areas should be self-evident as the relevant questions will appear continually. You should try to study these areas at the earliest possible opportunity to avoid undue build-up of your revision workload.

Avoid more than one session a day, particularly in the run up to the exam itself, and avoid adjusting the workload from the default calculated for you.

For multiple-choice questions, use the Show Me button if you don't know the answer to a question or get it wrong. Try not to guess, as this will not help your Smart Revision routine in the long term. Above all, be honest with yourself and the program because it is in your best interests to do so.

Where can you use Smart Revise?

We provide two versions of Smart Revise: An online version at this web site and an offline version, i.e. a program you can download and install on one machine. We strongly recommend the online version -- you will be able to use this wherever you have an internet connection, helping you to build and maintain a central record of your progress which will prove invaluable as time progresses. The offline version is available primarily for those who do not have access to the internet on a regular basis.

Hints and Tips

We have designed the web site to be quick and easy to use. Minimal use is made of graphics, making it cost-effective to use through mobile internet devices as well. In most browsers the revision screens recognise keyboard shortcuts: each link on the screen has an underlined letter which can be typed as an alternative to clicking on the link.

You can add your subject starting screen(s) to your browser bookmarks to make it quicker and easier to start your revision session. If you are not sharing a browser with other users, you can also get your browser to remember your logon password.

Logon and Charges

Click the "Continue" button to logon. You will be prompted for your user name and password which you can obtain from Actuarial Education Company. The logon name is your student number (entered as five digits with leading zeros). The password should be entered exactly as given to you (including the hyphen). All subjects are available on a trial basis allowing up to 12 sessions covering the first 50 questions. No charges will apply unless and until you specifically register for a subject. You will be given a warning before taking any action which will incur a charge.
